Every year state regulations mandate all business occupied territories are within certain guidelines. These businesses are classified as Non-Life Hazard and Life Hazard business.

Non-Life Hazard business include retail stores and offices. These businesses have to adhere to building and zoning laws that need to be re-certified each year. On the other hand Life Hazard businesses have to adhere to similar, but stricter guidelines. These businesses are more prone to causing physical harm or even death. Some of these businesses include restaurants, bars, gas stations and chemical facilities. There are strict guidelines that municipalities must follow in order to allow these businesses to pass inspection.

An inspection fee is issued for every business in the city or town. A survey of the occupied area is conducted. When a lot size is established an inspection fee is based on that lot size and location.

If a business does not pass inspection then the municipality attains the right to assess a fine based on local and state regulations. The business must also correct the violations or additional fines and late fees are issued.
